Correct measurements are the foundation of good fitting of garments.
Let us learn about the correct way to take body measurements.
- The best way to take measurement is with someone’s help. In case, you are taking the measurement on your own, make sure that there is a mirror in front of you.
- Use a good quality fabric tape measure. It should not be very old either as tape measures can stretch out over time resulting in incorrect body measurements.
- Tape should be absolutely straight i.e. parallel to the spine while taking lengthwise measurements.
- Stand erect and in right posture as slouching does tend to affect measurements.
- Do not wear cardigans, jackets or any bulky clothes while taking your measurements.
- It can be a bit difficult to know exactly how tight to pull the tape around the body. The tape should be a bit snug, but not tight. It should not be loose, either! Just wrap the tape around the area of the body being measured and hold it in place. You should be able to put a finger behind the tape, but not more than that.
- Measure the bust, hips at the fullest part. Measure all around the body (total circumference).
- Measure the waist where body bends. Hold the tape around the waist line with the ends of the tape crossed so that you can draw the ends back and forth. The tape will settle into the smallest portion of the body and that is the position for your waistline.
